Charles Orton

Charles Orton was educated at King's College London and the University of Edinburgh. He became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons and a Licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries of London in 1862, and a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1865. He earned his MD from the University of Durham in 1881. He lived and worked primarily in Staffordshire, serving first as House Surgeon and later as Consulting Physician at the North Staffordshire Infirmary. He also served with the 4th Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment, retiring with the rank of Surgeon Major. In 1870 he co-authored 'What We Observed During a Visit to the Seat of War' with W D Spanton, describing medical conditions during the Franco-Prussian War. He was President of the Staffordshire Branch of the British Medical Association and a member of its Parliamentary Bills Committee.
