Charles McNeil was born in Stranraer in 1881, the son of William McNeil, a general practitioner. He graduated MD from the University of Edinburgh in 1908 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1913. He spent his career at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh, as Assistant Physician and Physician. He became Lecturer in Diseases of Children at the University of Edinburgh in 1925 and was appointed the first Edward Clark Professor of Child Life and Health in 1931. He served as President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh from 1940 to 1943, President of the British Paediatric Association in 1941, and President of the Scottish Paediatric Association from 1950 to 1954. He died in 1964.
