Charles Mackie Begg was born in Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1879. He graduated MD from the University of Edinburgh in 1905 and returned to New Zealand the following year. Begg was commissioned as Surgeon Captain in the New Zealand Medical Corps and served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during the Gallipoli Campaign and later on the Western Front. He was awarded several honours, including Companion of the Order of the Bath, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1916. After the war he served as Director of Medical Services to the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in London. Begg died in London in 1919.
