Charles Lachlan Fraser became a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1885. He trained at the Royal Infirmary of Glasgow, where he was awarded the Macewen Medal in Surgery. He later practised in Berwick-upon-Tweed, working at the Berwick Infirmary. A member of the King's Own Scottish Borderers, he rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and also held the rank of Colonel in the Army Medical Reserve. He served as Surgeon to the Berwick Infirmary and the North British Railway Company and was Medical Officer for Berwick-upon-Tweed around the time of the First World War. He was Honorary Secretary of the Berwick branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and took part in rescue operations.
