Charles James Lewis studied at the University of Edinburgh and University College Liverpool. He graduated MB CM with first-class honours in 1885 and obtained the diploma of Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in the same year. He earned his MD in 1888, a BSc in Public Health in 1900, and a DSc in 1901. He was admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1893 and elected a Fellow in 1895. In 1905 he moved to Birmingham, where he became Lecturer in Public Health and Bacteriology, Director of the Public Health Laboratory, and Professor of Hygiene. He also served as Vice-President of the Pathology Branch of the British Medical Association and published several works on bacteriology and child health.
