Charles Edward Underhill was born at Tipton, Staffordshire, on 8 March 1845, into a family in which both his father and grandfather practised medicine. He received his medical education at Cambridge and Edinburgh, graduating MB at Cambridge in 1870. He then moved to Edinburgh to work as Demonstrator of Anatomy at the University before inheriting, in 1875, a large obstetric practice from Matthews Duncan. He served as House Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary, Physician to the Royal Maternity Hospital and the Simpson Memorial Pavilion, and Lecturer on Midwifery and the Diseases of Women and Children in the Extramural School. At the time of his death he was Consulting Physician to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children. He became a Fellow of the College in 1876 and served as President from 1906 until his death on 24 April 1908.
