Charles Cotton was born in Twickenham in 1856 and educated at King's College London. He became a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1879, a Member in 1881, and a Fellow in 1894. He began his career at St Barnabas Convalescent Home in 1883 and was later appointed Senior Physician at Ramsgate General Hospital and Seamen's Infirmary in 1895. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1920 for his work as Commissioner of No. 8 District of the St John Ambulance Brigade, covering Kent, Surrey, and Sussex. After retiring shortly before the First World War, he moved to Canterbury. He was a long-standing member of the Kent Archaeological Society and served on its council for over thirty years. He died in 1939.
