Charles Coates

Charles Coates was born in Headingley near Leeds and educated at Leeds Grammar School. After junior appointments at Bradford Infirmary and Brompton Hospital, he studied at Marischal College, University of Aberdeen, qualifying MD on 22 October 1856. He settled in Bath and became physician to the Royal Mineral Water Hospital, later senior governor, and was appointed consulting physician at the Royal United Hospitals, Bath. Coates was admitted to the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh on 4 August 1857 and to the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1873. He published 'Case of arrest of development in which there was entire absence of vagina' (The Lancet, 1858) and served as physician to the Bath General Hospital and resident clinical assistant at the Brompton Consumption Hospital. He died in 1909 aged 83.
