Charles Bradley Maitland was born in Brighton in 1856, the son of Edward Maitland. He undertook medical training at Sussex County Hospital and became a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1879. The following year he entered the Indian Medical Service and was elected a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1895. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and served as Principal Medical Officer of the Somaliland Expedition, during which he was killed in action in 1901.
