Carl Linnaeus

Carl Linnaeus was born in 1707 in southern Sweden. He studied medicine at the University of Lund and Uppsala University before obtaining his MD at Harderwijk in 1735. Linnaeus worked as house physician and garden superintendent for the Director of the East India Company at his private garden. Linnaeus’ publications demonstrated the system of nomenclature he developed which used the arrangement of the sexual organs of stamens and pistils to group plants into twenty-four classes, then subdivided into orders, genera and species. He became a medical professor at Uppsala University in 1739. He died in Uppsala in 1778.
