Byrom Bramwell was born in North Shields, the son and grandson of medical practitioners. He was educated at Cheltenham College and graduated MB with honours from the University of Edinburgh in 1869, later earning an MD with a gold medal in 1877. After holding house appointments, he joined his father in general practice and later obtained a part-time Lectureship in Medical Jurisprudence at the University of Durham.
