Benjamin Bartlet Buchanan

Benjamin Bartlet Buchanan was born in June 1785 at Oban, the son of Frederick Benjamin Buchanan and Lilly Bald. He studied at the University of Edinburgh, gaining his MD in 1808 with a dissertation entitled 'De opii usu ejusdemque effectibus in corpus humanum'. In 1810 he joined the Indian Medical Service. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1812. He married Mary Ann Ross, daughter of Colonel Andrew Ross and Isabella MacDonnell.
