Augustus West

Sir Augustus West was born in 1788. He entered the Royal Army Medical Corps on 26 May 1804 as a surgeon's mate and was promoted to assistant surgeon in 1805 and to staff surgeon in Portugal in 1809. He served in Hanover, Copenhagen, Walcheren, Portugal and Spain. West obtained his MD from the University of St Andrews on 5 December 1818 and was admitted a Licentiate of the College on 3 August 1819 and elected a Fellow on 2 November 1818. He was promoted to Deputy Inspector of Hospitals in 1819 and later to Deputy Inspector General of Hospitals in 1824, after which he retired on half pay. He was knighted on 24 November 1824 and later lived in Portugal and Paris. He died at Montfermeil on 16 August 1868.
