Angus Macdonald was born in Aberdeen in 1836. Despite an impoverished upbringing, which required him to work as a labourer during university vacations, he graduated MA from King's College, Aberdeen, in 1859 and subsequently obtained his MD from Edinburgh in 1864. After completing his studies, Macdonald established a practice in Edinburgh and lectured in the city's extramural school and at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. He published 'The bearings of chronic heart disease on pregnancy' in 1878. With an increasing focus on obstetrics, he was appointed Physician to the Royal Maternity Hospital. He died in Edinburgh in 1886.
