Andrew Nicoll first matriculated at the University of Edinburgh in 1809 and was awarded his MD on 12 September 1810. He entered the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1810 as a hospital mate and became an assistant surgeon in 1811. He was admitted a Licentiate of the College on 2 May 1815 and elected a Fellow on 7 November 1815. He returned to the University of Edinburgh to complete further study in 1818, and in the same year became a staff surgeon. He was promoted to the local rank of Deputy Inspector of Hospitals in Africa in 1820, where he died in 1823.
