Andrew Henderson studied medicine from 1821 to 1822 and received his MD from the University of Edinburgh in 1823. His dissertation, 'Dissertatio medica inauguralis, quaedam de vulneribus navalibus in praelio acceptis, complectens', was published the same year. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh on 5 February 1839.
