Andrew Duncan junior

Andrew Duncan junior was born in 1773 in Edinburgh, the son of Andrew Duncan senior, professor of medicine. Duncan was first apprenticed to a surgeon before taking an MA and then an MD at the University of Edinburgh. He went on to study in London at the medical school on Great Windmill Street, and continued his studies in Vienna, Pisa and Naples. In 1796 Duncan returned to Edinburgh and took up positions at the Royal Public Dispensary and the Edinburgh Fever Hospital. In 1807 he became the first professor of medical jurisprudence and medical police in Britain. In 1819 he resigned this position upon being appointed joint professor of the institutes of medicine with his father. In 1821 he became professor of materia medica. Duncan died in 1832.
