Andrew Balfour

Sir Andrew Balfour was born in Edinburgh in 1873. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating MD in 1898, and also undertook study at the University of Cambridge between 1895 and 1897. He was awarded the BSc in Public Health by the University of Edinburgh in 1900. He served initially as a military surgeon before taking up appointment as Medical Officer in Khartoum. In 1913, on his return to Britain, he founded the Wellcome Bureau of Scientific Research. During the First World War he again served in military medicine, with postings including Egypt and East Africa. In 1923 he was appointed Director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He died in Kent in 1931.
