Allan Dalzell was born in 1821 in Madras, India, where his father was serving in the Army. He initially followed his father into service in both the Army and Navy until 1846, after which he returned to the family home in Edinburgh. He obtained his MD from Edinburgh in 1853 but did not pursue a medical career, instead becoming a lecturer in practical chemistry at the University of Edinburgh. He was later appointed Professor of Chemistry and Materia Medica at the Royal Dick Veterinary College, Edinburgh. He died in Edinburgh on 29 July 1869.
