Alexander Stewart

Alexander Stewart was born in 1753, the son of John Stewart, owner of Bonskeid House in Perthshire. Stewart studied at the University of Edinburgh but gained his MD on 31 October 1795 from the University of St Andrews. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in February 1796. He went as a surgeon with the Scots Brigade to the army of the Prince of Orange in Holland, later becoming and serving as the doctor in Dunkeld. He was a friend of the Duke of Atholl and in 1796 leased his lands at Bonskeid to Lady Bath and her husband Sir James Pulteney, who built a house there. At their deaths, the house and its contents returned to Alexander, who took possession with his family. He died in 1835 in Perth.
