Alexander Peddie, the son of an Edinburgh minister, was educated at Edinburgh High School and encouraged into medicine by Dr John Abercrombie. Apprenticed in 1830 to James Syme of Minto House, he later studied in Paris and introduced the stethoscope to Edinburgh on his return.
