Alexander Ninian Bruce was the son of Sir Alexander Bruce, lecturer in clinical medicine at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. He graduated MD from the University of Edinburgh in 1911 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1915. He gained numerous academic awards, including the Ellis Prize in Physiology, the Senior McKenzie Bursary in Anatomy, and the Pattison Prize in Clinical Surgery. Bruce worked as lecturer in physical neurology at the University of Edinburgh, consultant physician at Bangour Hospital, and clinical tutor at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. He died in 1968.
