Alexander Mackenzie

Alexander Mackenzie was the son of Kenneth McKenzie, a tutor from Kilcoy, and Janet Douglas. He studied humanities at the United College of St Salvator and St Leonard, University of St Andrews, where he received the Ramsay Bursary. He was also a medical student at the University of Edinburgh from 1785 to 1787. In 1788 he became assistant surgeon in the Indian Medical Service at Madras. He was promoted to surgeon in 1796 and senior surgeon in 1810 before retiring in 1815. He received his MD in 1803. After retiring he lived in Southampton until 1822, then bought Bursledon House, now part of the Southampton Hospital School. He died in London in 1842.
