Alexander Lockhart Gillespie was born in 1865 into a prominent medical family, being the grandson of Sir Alexander Morison, former President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. He studied at the Universities of Berlin and Prague and graduated MD with a gold medal from the University of Edinburgh in 1888. He became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1891 and a Fellow in 1892 and served as President of the Royal Medical Society of Edinburgh. He worked as a Medical Referee for several Edinburgh institutions and insurance organisations and contributed articles to medical journals and the Encyclopaedia Britannica. He served as Medical Registrar at Donaldson's Hospital and the Royal Infirmary until his death in 1904.
