Alexander Dingwall Fordyce was born in Edinburgh in 1875. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy before studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating MB in 1898. He undertook postgraduate study in Paris, Vienna and Berlin. He was admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1900 and elected a Fellow in 1903. In 1906 he was appointed Assistant Physician to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children and later moved to Liverpool, where he became Honorary Physician to the Royal Liverpool Children's Hospital and Lecturer in Diseases of Children at the University of Liverpool. In 1916 he published 'Diseases of Children'. He died in 1940.
