Alexander Crum Brown was born in Edinburgh in 1838. He initially entered the University of Edinburgh to study arts before transferring to medicine. He was awarded an MA in 1858 and an MD in 1861. Brown undertook further study at the University of London in the sciences and then studied chemistry in Germany. He subsequently returned to Edinburgh, where he taught medicine and chemistry as a private lecturer. He died in Edinburgh in 1922.
