Alexander Black trained at the University of Edinburgh, earning his MB in 1877. By the time he was elected a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, he had also undertaken study at the universities of Berlin, Prague, and Vienna, and gained practical experience at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. He worked throughout his career in Edinburgh, holding posts at several hospitals in the city, and later served as Medical Officer to the Edinburgh Royal Dispensary. He died in Edinburgh in 1906.
