Alexander Ballantyne

Alexander Ballantyne was born at Chorley in 1838, his family moving shortly thereafter to Dalkeith. He obtained his MD from Edinburgh in 1860 and undertook further study in Vienna and Berlin. After working briefly at the Royal Edinburgh Asylum, he served as assistant to Dr Anderson of Selkirk. He later returned to Dalkeith to establish a practice, where he worked for many years as a family doctor and District Medical Officer. The practice was subsequently taken over by his son, Harold S Ballantyne. He died at Gullane on 3 October 1916.
