Alan Leonard Smith Tuke was born in Edinburgh, the youngest son of Sir John Batty Tuke. He qualified MB CM from the University of Edinburgh in 1887 and continued his studies in Europe. His first appointment was as House Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. He later settled in general practice and served the Dunfermline and West Fife Hospital. During the First World War he served as a Major and was awarded the Military Cross in 1916. He was elected President of the Fife Branch of the British Medical Association in 1922 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh on 2 November 1926. He was made a Free Burgess of Dunfermline in 1931 and appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Fife in 1938. He died on 25 May 1948 aged 82.
