Adam Burt was born some time in 1760. He attended two years of medical study at the University of Edinburgh from 1778 to 1779. By 1782 he was assistant surgeon in the Indian Medical Service, rising to surgeon in 1794 and being promoted to head surgeon and next in line for appointment to the Medical Board by 1806. He received his MD in 1808 from the University of St Andrews. Burt published 'A tract on the biliary complaints of Europeans in hot climates; founded on observations in Bengal' in 1785 and 'On the dissection of the pangolin' in 'Asiatick Researches', vol. 2, 5th ed., in 1807. He died in Calcutta on 20 December 1814.
