
Anne Merriman
This interview highlights the distinguished career of Dr. Anne Merriman MBE, FRCPI, FRCPEd and great pioneer of palliative care in Africa. Anne discusses her early life and inspirations, her graduation from University College and her initial calling as a nun. She then provided medical care in Nigeria for two decades. Her compassion for the less fortunate and suffering led her to palliative care then a nascent development. She became an important palliative care pioneer Singapore and most significantly in Africa. She received a Nobel peace prize nomination, and founded a model of palliative care for all of Africa, Hospice Africa Uganda when she was 58. Her simplicity, humility and passion to serve the poor and needy is a powerful witness, a manifestation of her strong faith. In May 2025 she celebrates her 90th birthday in Uganda where she is retired but still a passionate advocate of palliative care.
