MRCP(UK) is a requirement for entry into specialist internal medicine training in the UK and an internationally valued professional distinction.

MRCP(UK) components

The examination has three components:

  • Part 1 written examination, based on multiple choice questions
  • Part 2 written examination, based on multiple choice questions
  • PACES - Part 2 clinical examination, a Practical Assessment of Clinical Examination Skills

Successful completion of the entire three-part examination is required before you can start specialist internal medicine training in the UK. Guidance regarding the best time to sit each part of the examination is available. Candidates can choose to sit all three parts of the examination through the Edinburgh, Glasgow or London Colleges who operate examining centres throughout the UK and overseas.

Examinations Centres

You can apply though the Edinburgh collge to sit examination in one of the following centres:

PART 1 - Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Leicester, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield

PART 2 - Edinburgh Manchester, Newcastle

PACES - Various locations throughout Scotland and England, and on occasion, Northern Irleand.

Part 1 and Part 2 (written) examinations can be taken in the College. PACES is taken in the purpose built Clinical Skills Assessment Centre at the Western General Hospital, one of the busiest international examining centres. Please note that candidates for the written exams can select their centre, but PACES candidates are allocated a centre, which can be anywhere within the UK.

Sitting the exam in Edinburgh provides an excellent opportunity to visit the College and explore this historic city, renowned for its medical science, architecture and culture.

The College has considerable expertise in running the MRCP(UK) examinations in Edinburgh, at our local and regional centres throughout Scotland, as well as across the UK and internationally. Our experienced examination team are responsible for all stages of the candidate administration  and are happy to offer support to those sitting in any of our examination centres from application through to results.

Candidates sitting the examination through one of our many regional centres around the UK or internationally will similarly be assured a warm reception and supportive environment in which to sit the examination.

Please note that PACES examination dates can fall on any day during the assessment period, including Saturdays and Sundays.
