1787
No4th Novr 7th. 1787.
George Donaldson at 29, is affected with a severe pain in his left leg. It begins in the back part of the leg a little below the calf & from thence it extends upwards along the course of the thigh to the hip joint & region of the loins. It is chiefly distressing to him in the night, particularly when he begins to be warm in bed. It abates somewhat towards morning but never entirely leaves him. Pulse about 80 but rather low & weak. Belly regular, Strength little impaird excepting in his leg. Appetite good, but he is often affected with intense thirst. The pain of his leg began about a year ago. It superveend to the sudden healing up of an ulcer in his leg from which [there] had been a considerable discharg for a year & a half. And to the sudden stopage of this discharge he attributes his present complaints. He has used various medicines & from some of them he has obtaind temporary relief. But from none any permanent benefit. He frequently remarks that his leg is easier during the the night after hard labour throug the day. Rx. Ol. Terebinth ℥ i. Mucil. G. Arab. Ag. He was however remarkably drowsy during the course of the succeeding day, which led him to discontinue their use. His pain has been very severe during the course of last week. But it has been almost entirely confined to his foot. He finds his urine still encreased from the mixture. Interm Pil Theb. Cont. Mist cum Ol. Tereb. & cap indies hor. 6[ta] Pomerid.
