    George Donaldson

    1787

    No4th November 7th. 1787.

George Donaldson at 29, is affected with a severe pain in his left leg. It begins in the back part of the leg a little below the calf & from thence it extends upwards along the course of the thigh to the hip joint & region of the loins. It is chiefly distressing to him in the night, particularly when he begins to be warm in bed. It abates somewhat towards morning but never entirely leaves him.

Pulse about 80 but rather low & weak. Belly regular, Strength little impaired excepting in his leg. Appetite good, but he is often affected with intense thirst.

The pain of his leg began about a year ago. It supervened to the sudden healing up of an ulcer in his leg from which [there] had been a considerable discharge for a year & a half. And to the sudden stoppage of this discharge he attributes his present complaints. He has used various medicines & from some of them he has obtained temporary relief.

But from none any permanent benefit. He frequently remarks that his leg is easier during the night after hard labour through the day.

His urine is considerably increased since he began the mixture which sits easily on his stomach. His pain has been upon the whole considerably easier. But he had a severe return of it last night & he in general sleeps ill.

The mixture with the Oleum Terebinthinae sits easily on his stomach & his urine still continues to be increased, although not augmented since the last report. He thinks the pain of his leg nothing diminished in severity though he can walk with much more ease than before.

Took the pills for some nights but they had no effect in procuring sleep. He was however remarkably drowsy during the course of the succeeding day, which led him to discontinue their use.

His pain has been very severe during the course of last week. But it has been almost entirely confined to his foot. He finds his urine still increased from the mixture.

The mixture has not now the effect of increasing the quantity of his urine, & his pills though taken early give him no sleep during the night. His pains since the last report have been more severe than ever extending from his foot to his back. The leg is a little swelled
