    No15 Novr 25 1785.

    Joseph Begbie at 41 A hat maker, of an unhealthy appearance very thin & emaciated, is affected with a fixd pain of the dull obtuse kind, in the right breast, which is much aggravated on full inspiration & on pressure or on coughing, by which he is sometimes much harrassd. He also complains of severe shooting pains in the back & loins, particularly in the left side. These as well as the affection of the breast, are worst in bed, as he says & easiest when he is taking any gentle exercise. He is subject to constant headach & to frequent

    distension of the epigastric region, to Flatus & Borborygmi

    Pulse about 65 & feeble. Tongue clean. Belly bound. Great thirst No appetite. He sleeps ill & complains much of great general debility.

    These complaints commenced about six weeks ago. He thinks they are the consequence of these continued fevers which attackd him in very rapid succession begining about three months ago & which reduced his strength very much.

    He says he is much exposed to cold in the exercise of his profession

    Decr 3. Had some uneasiness at stomach from the powders which have had the effect of gently moving his belly. but have occasiond no diaphoresis His pains are nothing alleviated, from the ointment but he is less affected with the distension of his abdomen though he is often distressd with dyspn particular at bed time App. still very bad. P60.

    B. easy but sleeps ill during the night

    Decr. 10 Is still much affected with pain in his loins & chest particularly in the left side. But he thinks his breathing [somewhat] relievd since he began the use of the pills & the powders keep his belly easy.

    17 Has had sickness & vomiting from the powders, & he still complains much of the pain in his breast & sides as well as of the difficulty of breathing. Belly regular appetite somewhat mended

    24. Thinks his complaints somewhat easier but he is still much distressd with headach particularly in the night.

    31. Is still at times affected with his pains & headach, but his symptoms are upon the whole somewhat easier.

    Janr 14 Pains continue somewhat easier but he is still at times affected with pretty severe returns of the headach in particular.
