    30th Dec 1785.

    No23. Edward Ross. at 44 is subjected to a very consid var. of stom ailm.

    And in these have at least ordin charact, of Dyspepsia.

    An affect in gener. more obstin & distress than danger.

    With our patient however not of long standing

    And hopeful that in no long time may be removed.

    In treatm here, have had recourse to Pulv. Cretac an absorb. united to an aromat.

    And from this hope that may be able to allev some of most urgen sympt in conseq of destruct of acid.

    But with view to cure will prob. be necess to do something more.

    And to have recourse to such remed as will tend to strength tone of stom and alter state of secret.

    In effecting this often best effect from veget. bitters.

    And have here thoughts of begun empl. one of strong of these Absynth

    This shall prob. empl. have directed under form of Tinct Absinth comb. with Pepp. mint water.

    But from no remed can here expect much service unless united with exercise in open air.

    And this as far as state of weakn & his circum in other respects will permit shall enjoin to patien

    From these meas on pres occas at least hope for fav. termin of his compl.
