1785
30th December 1785.
No23. Edward Ross. at 44 is subjected to a very considerable variety of stomach ailments. And in these have at least ordinary characteristics, of Dyspepsia. An affection in general more obstinate & distressing than dangerous. With our patient however not of long standing And hopeful that in no long time may be removed. In treatment here, have had recourse to Pulveris Cretacea an absorbent united to an aromatic. And from this hope that may be able to alleviate some of most urgent symptoms in consequence of destruction of acid. But with view to cure will probably be necessary to do something more. And to have recourse to such remedies as will tend to strengthen tone of stomach and alter state of secretion. In effecting this often best effect from vegetable bitters. And have here begun employing one of strongest of these Absinthe This have directed under form of Tincture Absinthe combined with Peppermint water. But from no remedy can here expect much service unless united with exercise in open air. And this as far as state of weakness & his circumstances in other respects will permit shall enjoin to patient From these measures on present occasion at least hope for favourable termination of his complaint.
