No26. 24th Decr. 1784.
Margt. Russell at 50 as soon as she takes any food, feels a sensation as of wind passing from her stomach up her right side to the top of her head, whence it descends to her right eye, which is very weak & almost closed. She frequently throws up her food by mouthfuls, upon which she perceives a very sour taste in her mouth. She is sensible of a ball rising from her stomach a little way up the oesophagus. She complains of a pain in the right side of the Thorax which affects her respiration & she is also affected with pain on the hip & outside of the right thigh a little above the joint. Pulse natural. Belly regular. Catamenia have disappeard for two years. The complaint are of two years standing, but have encreased very much within these nine month She attributes them to a very copious bloodletting about two years ago for a pain of her side since which the Catamenia have never appeard although they were quite regular before. She has used many medicine without benefite. But thinks her head & eye relievd by a blister applied behind the ear a few days ago. App. vesic pone aurum sinist & postea. f. fontic ope Ungt. Episp. nec non Rx. Pulv. Valer. Sylv. Pulv. Cort. Peruv. aa ℥p.Mcap. coch parv. ter de die. Janr 1. There is a free discharge from the blister And she has taken the powders as directed. All her symptoms were considerably relievd from some time. But within these two days past her headach is again aggravated. Cont. Fontic & Pulv. Valer. Sylv. u. a. Janr 8th There was a very copious discharge from the blister but as she thought that her sight was impaired by it, she allowed it to dry up. She thinks that the powders excite sickness at stomach, & she has discontinued the use of them for some days. Interm. med & cap. Pil Merc. gr V om. m. & vesp. 15 Symptoms much as before Cont. Pil. Merc. u. a. 22. Is free from all her symptoms excepting a slight defect of vision Let her be dismissd.
