    No35 Febr 27th 1784

    James Harris at 40, yesterday about one o’Clock he was affected with nausea soon followed by a severe coldness which continued without preceding trembling for an hour & a half. To this a burning heat succeeded which was relievd at nine this morning by an universal & profuse sweat.

    But it soon disappeared. Pulse 80 & small. Head & back very painful. Appetite bad. Belly costive

    His first paroxism was on Sunday the 14th inst, & they have since recurrd every second day. But the succeeding interval is always shorter than the [preceeding]. He has taken two vomits of Ipecac. One of these he took at the commencement of a paroxism & it had the effect of shortening the cold fit, without disturbing either of the following stages.

    28. Cap. Pulv. Ipecac Ji. pro. Emet. er. m. nec non habeat. Pulv. Cort Peruv rub. ℥ i. cap coch parv. om. hor. incip post parox.

    March 6th The vomit operated well. But he took the bark only during the time of his fits & he has had these paroxisms since the last report

    Repetat. Cort. Peruv. u. a. & cap. coch min. ii om. hor. donee consump. ℥I Incip post parox.

    13. Began the bark after the paroxism on Sunday had ceased & had taken the whole of it before Tuesday. But the fit commenced at the usual hour. He had however no fit on Thursday but was attackd with a paroxism yesterday about ten o’Clock. He thinks it was slighter than formerly. In other respects also he is much relievd.

    20 Has taken the bark as directed & since that he has had no paroxism, but he complains much of sickness at stomach, faintness

    27 Has taken the infusion as directed & since that he has had no paroxism, but he complains much of sickness at stomach, faintness & pain of back.

    Interm Cortex & Rx. Infus Amar ℥V Tinct. Aromat ℥i M cap. ℥i bis indies.

    Has taken the infusion as directd but he has had a paroxism almost every day since the last report.

    The fits have been observed to anticipate a little but in general they seldom continued above three hours.

    Interm. Mist. & Rx. Pulv. Cort. Peruv. sub. ℥p Sal. Ammon crud gr V M cap dos ter de die.

    April 3d. He has taken the powder as directed without any inconvenience & he thinks himself in other respects much better.
