    James Keir

    1790

    No 28 January 26th 1790

James Keir at 63, a labourer

The surface of his body & the tunica adnata of his eyes appear lightly tinged of a yellow colour. He also complains of constant sickness at stomach, but unattended with vomiting & he is affected with an obtuse pain in the right side which is increased in a recumbent posture.

Pulse 86, Tongue white, Appetite much impaired, Belly rather bound & the faeces appear of a white colour. His urine is discharged in rather less quantity than usual & it stains linen immersed in it of a yellow colour.

These complaints have continued for about a fortnight past, & he supposes them to have arisen from exposure to severe cold while at his work. He has taken a vomit from which he has experienced some benefit.

The vomit operated well & he has in general an easy stool every day from the pills. He thinks himself rather easier. The yellowness is somewhat diminished & his stools rather of a darker colour.
