    No19 December. 12 1789.

    Mathew Steele at 47 a labourer complains of violent pain in his stomach, attended with Anorexia & vomiting of a thin watery fluid. He is also affected with a sense of distension in his stomach occurring at uncertain periods, & he is much relieved by a discharge of wind.

    Pulse 76 & feeble Tongue white Belly bound. Appetite bad, & he has slept very ill in the night for some time past.

    His complaints have continued for five weeks, & arose as he thinks from exposure to cold, while he was engaged in harvest work.

    [He] has taken some salts & a vomit from which he obtained some degree of temporary relief.

    Has had free passage of his belly from the pills, & the pain in his stomach was considerably easier for some days; but of late he has taken none of his medicine, since which he thinks that the pain is again somewhat aggravated.

    He now sleeps well during the night, & his stomach complaints are much easier, through the day, particularly since Wednesday last. His belly is still however bound, unless when he takes the purgative pills.
