Patrick McCulloch
(1789)
No29. Patrick McCulloch. at 22.
A distinctly marked case of Haemoptysis. And in circumstances perhaps still more alarming than that of Robert Miln For here I think reason to suspect that has already even degenerated into Phthisis. To that disease patient from his age more disposed than other. For is still in what commonly reckoned the consumptive period. Here also reason to suspect that affection of lungs of considerable standing had preceded haemoptysis. For had been subjected to pain of side for space even of two years Since Haemoptysis began has been subjected to repeated recurrence. And from appearance of expectoration conjoined with redness of tongue, have reason to think that some degree of purulent discharge already takes place. Pulse indeed never remarked very quick. Nor has he those other symptoms which indicate what can be called an exquisite hectic fever. But at same time emaciated appearance & loss of strength unquestionably very alarming. And am I own very apprehensive that in no long time will fall victim to his disease. In this however as well as in case of Miln is intention also to make trial of Gum Tragacanth with Starch. And shall at least be thus afterwards able to speak of it from more experience.
