David Sheriff
(1789)
The First case David Sheriff.
But since formerly spoke of him, has not attended here. Is by profession a Seaman & probably in course of business has left us for some time. Shall at present therefore, add nothing to remarks offered in last lecture. May only repeat that consider [what] has formerly taken place in his case as affording some useful lessons to myself. Had before held, following [opinion] of greater part of natural, & relying in plates in [French] treatise respecting Madame Nouffer medicine1 That distinctly marked difference between Taenia lata & Taenia Cucurbitina. And had exhibited two species one as example of Tape the other of Gourd worm. Now however satisfied that a Taenia at one part of length may be [distinguished] of Gourd, at another of Tape kind. This manifestly case in [part] of Sheriffs worm formerly brought away. But whether to give it one or other name evidently an obstinate one. And could not be radically removed by Tin powder, although from this medicine large portions expelled. Whether should have been more successful by Dr Herrenschwand & Madame Nouffers medicine remains to be determined by future trials if such shall be afforded.
