    Martha Nixon

    (1789)

    No3. Martha Nixon at 56.

Case of this patient somewhat of complicated nature.

And is I think evidently subjected to two diseases, often occurring altogether separately & distinct.

In cough dyspnoea & mucous expectoration, have common symptoms of chronic catarrh

And as is very common with this affection, has now had regular attacks every winter, for some years past

But besides this is also subjected to various symptoms evidently arising from flatulence in alimentary canal.

Which although may tend to aggravate dyspnoea & other pectoral symptoms, yet evidently unconnected with these.

And indeed either part of affection may subsist independently of other.

Both parts of affection very difficult to combat.

This particularly to be dreaded of catarrh at commencement of winter season.

And then also from cold weather restraining from exercise in open air, Flatulence more apt to increase.

Am however hopeful that by proper remedies may be able in some degree at least to combat both.

Particularly by those producing regular discharge by belly, relaxing spasms, & promoting expectoration.

Is with these intentions, that have had recourse to Pill Foetid cum Aloe.

But of these & other practices reserve observations till afterwards treat of case at more length.
