Susan Weed
(1788)
No14th Susan Weed at 3.
In case of this infant have I am afraid a case of Venereal Gonorrhoea. For here all the ordinary appearances of the disease. And at same time in way of infection as sleeping with her mother who subjected to it at time when her affection began. Easy to conceive that from [linen] of mother an application of matter to parts in which disease here chiefly seated may have taken place. This indeed do not pretend to advance as an assertion admitting of no doubt. For in some instances running from vagina even at early period of life not venereal. But a very rare occurrence And when takes place seldom with excoriation or inflammation. Consider Venereal Gonorrhoea therefore as here by much most probable supposition. And to this treatment accordingly directed. At same time measures employed such as well suited for it if mere mucous discharge. Gentle laxative viz, Saturn Solution for washing parts, & Saturn ointment for application to excoriate. To this treatment hope may soon yield. But if does not & if no reason to alter opinion shall probably have recourse to a small quantity of Mercurial. Particularly to a gentle course of Calomel. Of practices however already directed or which may be directed, shall afterwards speak at more length.
