In case of this patient have I think an evident complication of diseases. Can be little doubt that not a few of his symptoms are evident effects of flatulence. But at same time am now inclined to think, that this by much least dangerous part of affection. For have I think much ground to apprehend that subjected to Phthisis. Of this indeed when case taken had not same evidence as have now. And accordingly began by directing medicine against flatulence & affection of alimentary canal Was with view to these that [directed] Foetid pills & mixture of Tincture Absinthe with Aromatic Tincture. But since begun these, while [uneasiness] in bowels much diminished, cough has become more severe. And has been attended according to his account with expectoration of matter, evidently purulent with mixture of blood. This taken in conjunction with state of pulse & other circumstances mentioned in History of case, gives strong presumption of Phthisis. And if that the case [too] much reason to fear that disease will have fatal termination. At same time do not consider it as one of most unfavourable cases. For view it as example of what in [illegible] distinction to Tuberculous & Catarrhal may be styled ulcerous Phthisis. And propose as far as circumstances of case will allow to give fair trial to Gum Myrrh.
