Katharine McDonald
(1787-1788)
No28 Katharine McDonald at 31.
In case of this patient most distressing symptom pain of side. This however neither constant nor fixed to any particular part. And from connection with distension of stomach, with nausea, & vomiting may conclude that whole the affect of flatulence. Accordingly all symptoms much alleviated, on discharge of wind. Am however somewhat doubtful whether to same cause, can attribute headache. Is indeed certain that from affection of alimentary canal headache often arises. And that this here case not less probable from vertigo & tendency to syncope with which accompanied. But in extension of pain of head to lower jaw, have a circumstance creating some suspicion. At any rate however consider affection of alimentary canal as most important & most immediately requiring aid. And by observing whether on alleviation of these headaches removed or not will best be able to determine these be connected or contrary. Hence then to former alone that practice hitherto directed. And while with view to immediate expulsion of flatulence have had recourse to pill foetid, with hopes of combating that state of intestines on which extrication depends have directed, the mixture of bitter & aromatic tincture. And by effects resulting from these will in some degree be guided in future practices.
