    DEP/DUA/1/41/38 (Normalised version)

    Donald Frazer

    (1786-1787)

    Donald Frazer.

In case of this patient a distinctly marked instance of Chronic Catarrh.

A disease of which have already oftener than once had occasion to speak in present course.

And of which delivered sentiments at last lecture.

Now therefore almost unnecessary to add anything respecting it.

Especially as instance before us occurred without any peculiar symptoms.

    And as already favourable termination.

How far however can with any justice attribute this to medicine here employed a matter of doubt.

Yet may venture to say that at least no bad effect.

And probably even contributed to cure.

Began by directing repeated Emetic for unloading breast.

And Infusion of Nicotiana as diuretic.

In obviating operation of both expectorants [illegible ].

For while vomits very full effect thought also urine increased.

A consequence perhaps in some degree to be attributed to emetics.

For after these, not unfrequently observed.

Perhaps however more from water introduced for promoting action, than from vomit itself.

For this on contrary observed even rather to have opposite effect.

In so much indeed that Emetics recommended in Diabetes.

But though in part from water taken with Emetics yet more Nicotiana.

At least this probably from general effect.

But from whatever cause might have expected from this as well as from unloading breast some relief of cough.

This however did not at least immediately take place.

For at succeeding report found that cough still continued to be very severe.

Hoped however, that by continuation, desired effect might be obtained.

Hence directed not only that should persist in use, but increased quantity.

Accordingly ordered 20 drops ter de die.

But at same time became necessary also to move belly.

And with this intention directed composite powder of Cream Tartar.

Only however in such quantity as to have gentle effect.

Whether from these remedies change induced in disease or not yet such change took place.

And at succeeding report, cough so far mitigated that was himself disposed to think farther attendance [unnecessary]

And at least presumption that benefitted by practice employed.

At same time cannot be considered as cured.

For from even slight exposure to cold liable to recurrence of affection.

And by no means improbable that during late cold wind may in reality have taken place.
