    Nelly McKay

    1786

    No 2 October 27 1786

Nelly McKay at 10 of a complexion rather florid, has the ball of her left eye considerably enlarged, with an opacity of the lens & there is a whitish scar on the cornea. The vessels of the tunica adnata also are remarkably turgid, with a considerable degree of inflammation, on that membrane & also on the eye lids. This affection is attended with acute pain & a considerable discharge of tears especially in the evening & morning. The tears by their acrimony have slightly excoriated & inflamed the skin of the cheek over which they trickle.

Pulse 80 & of natural strength belly regular. These symptoms began about a month ago & are ascribed to a scratch with a nail which entered the cornea. Since that time they have been gradually increasing. She is but lately recovered from the smallpox, but says she had none of these symptoms previous to the scratch

She has made no application to the eye

10 The pain of the eye continues easier & the inflammation is considerably diminished.

But the opacity of the cornea & enlargement of the eye are in the same state as before

November 18th The inflammation on her eye is almost entirely gone, & she is now free from pain. But the offuscation of the pupil, continues nearly as before. It does not entirely prevent vision. The powders keep her belly gently open.
