    DEP/DUA/1/40/27 (Normalised version)

    Katherine Sutherland

    (1786-1787)

No 27th Katherine Sutherland at 23.

Another instance of distinctly marked pulmonary affection.

Has been hitherto & still continues chiefly at least, under form of Haemoptysis.

But here also very great danger of degeneration into Phthisis Pulmonalis.

And from this in end fatal conclusion.

At same time present symptoms cannot be considered as unfavourable

And many instances where appearance more alarming, in which however no Phthisis occurs.

Here have begun treatment by use of a refrigerant & mucilaginous medicine.

A combination viz of Cream of Tartar & Gum Arabic.

And to this with view to farther refrigerant power have added a proportion of Nitre.

If under this medicine removal of bloody expectoration, with mitigation of cough & relief of pain of breast, shall not probably think of doing anything farther.

But if pain of breast severe may lead to application of blister.

As means of alleviating cough may employ an opiate.

And to restrain haemorrhage may have recourse to astringent.

In these particulars however must be directed by future situation of patient & future occurrences.
